Porcelain Veneer Abroad Procedure
- Design Finalization: The dentist will first discuss the procedure with you and finalize your smile design.
- Anesthesia and Tooth Preparation: You will be given local anesthesia. After this, the dentist will remove a small amount of the front surface of your tooth (about 0.3 to 0.5 millimeters). This will ensure proper space for the veneer to attach.
- Tooth Impression: Finally, the dentist takes an impression of your teeth, which will be used to create the veneers.
This procedure can take from 1-2 hours, depending on how many teeth you are getting restored. After the first visit, your teeth will feel a bit rough and strange. But don't worry, they will look just the same, even from very close up.
Special Care after Visit 1:
- Brush your teeth well as they can stain easily at this stage.
- The prepared tooth becomes sensitive to air and cold stuff. For this, you can ask the dentist to place a temporary veneer (extra charges applicable).
- Trying your Veneers: On your second visit, you will try out your porcelain veneer. Ensure that your prosthetics meet your esthetic and functional needs.
- Washing of Tooth: After finalization, the tooth is cleansed with chemicals to achieve a bond.
- Bonding: The veneers are bonded using a special dental cement.
- Photo Polymerization: A light beam then initiates the release of a catalyst to harden the cement.
You can try out your veneers and have them bonded on two separate visits as both these processes can take time.
Special Care during Visit 2:
- Pay special attention to the color of the veneer.
- You can have multiple modifications before veneer bonding. After that, major modifications will require an extra fee.
Porcelain Veneers vs Crowns
Properties | Veneers | Dental Crown |
---|---|---|
Coverage | Covers visible tooth (front) | Covers entire tooth |
Tooth Reduction | Less tooth reduction | More tooth reduction |
Thickness | 1 mm | 2 mm or more |
Usage | Cannot be used for broken tooth or tooth decay | Cover all types of tooth defect |
Strength | Less strong | Stronger |
Lumineers
Lumineers are made of the same material as that of the Veneers. However, the lumineers are ultra-thin and may resemble a contact lens in thickness. On top of it, there is no need to prepare or remove any sensitive part of your tooth.
In spite of such advantages, lumineers are not always preferred. The major reason is that these are expensive. Also, due to their extremely thin surface, these are unable to hide severely deformed teeth.

What are the Disadvantages of Veneers?
Veneers may boost your confidence by correcting your smile, however there do have some drawbacks. These are:
- Your veneered tooth may become sensitive to heat or cold or both.
- You can no longer bite hard objects which can cause breaking of your veneers.
- It is not a reversible process.
- If you are a tea or coffee addict or you smoke and drink heavily, then the veneers can get stained.
Precautions with Porcelain Veneers
Do you know that porcelain veneers can last as long as 20 years? Though porcelain is long-lasting, the exposed part of the tooth is still vulnerable to decay. Therefore, it is important that you take good care of them.
Here are a few steps to ensure the longevity of your veneers:
- Avoid frequent snacking as it accelerates tooth decay.
- Brush and floss regularly and diligently.
- Contact your dentist if you notice puffiness or bleeding in the gums which are around your veneers.
- Visit your dentist regularly (atleast 3 times a year) to get your teeth margins polished.
- Avoid excessive coffee, tea, wine, tobacco products, and other chromogenic products as their long term use can spoil the aesthetic effect achieved by veneers.
- Avoid abrasive toothpaste, as they can scratch the margins.
- Biting pins, nails, etc., and striking them with hard objects may cause veneers breakage. If you participate in contact sports, wear a mouth protector.
