Review of Dental Work in Cancun
Still have doubts? Have a look at these videos, where our patients review the dental work they got done in Cancun:
A dental implant procedure involves implanting a small titanium post surgically into the jawbone.
An abutment (connecting element) is attached to the implant either at the same time of implant placement or after healing.
Then, the dentist mounts the replacement tooth on the implant.
Diabetes and leukemia can interfere with implant healing (source: ADA).
Procedure
Standard dental implants are placed in two stages:
The implant is placed in the upper/lower jaw as per the requirement. It is normal to experience swelling or tenderness after the procedure.
During this time, a temporary prosthesis can be worn over the implant site.
Over the next two to six months, the implant and the bone are allowed to bond together to form an anchor for your artificial tooth.
After the implant is fully integrated into the jaw, a crown or a denture is attached on top of the implant.
Types of Implants
i. Single Tooth Replacement: A single dental implant replaces the tooth that has been lost. It functions like a natural tooth and usually has a dental crown on top.
In the long term, a single implant can be more aesthetic and easier to keep clean than a bridge.
ii. Fixed Multiple Tooth Replacement: Multiple teeth are replaced through various implant procedures. Options for fixed multiple tooth replacement include:
iii. Snap-on Dentures: There are denture options that ‘snaps onto’ your dental implants to offer a more comfortable fit.
The biggest advantage of snap-on overdentures is that they make cleaning easier. You should remove implant-support dentures daily to clean the denture and gum area.
Advantages of Dental Implants
According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, dental implants are a better alternative to traditional methods because they do not decay and preserve the jawbone.
Improved chewing ability: A dental implant attaches to the root, making chewing and biting easier. Patients can enjoy their favourite foods again.
Improved appearance: Implant procedures are one of the most dramatic ways to improve a person’s appearance.
Easy aftercare: Implants are permanent and require the same care as your regular teeth
Convenience: Poor fitting removable dentures allow for slippage, leading to slurred words and issues while eating certain foods. Implants won’t fall or slip like traditional dentures, making talking and eating easier.
Improved long-term health: Dental implants reduce the risk of periodontal disease and other oral infections. They also keep the jaw bone healthy.
Immediate Load (Same Day) Implants Explained
Here is a video in which our Cancun dental surgeon explains how same-day implants work:
According to Dr. Joaquin Berron, our dental surgeon:
Immediate load implants are preferred to traditional implants when doing a full arch restoration with 4-5 implants.
The former allows the patient to walk out of the clinic with a fixed set of temporary teeth the same day.
The temporary prosthetic is changed 4-6 months later.
Success Rates of Dental Implants
Dental implants generally offer ‘survival rates’ comparable to or better than other teeth replacement options. The success rate of dental implants is quite high.
According to a study by J Kern and colleagues, the estimated success rate of dental implants was 97.9% in the upper jaw and 98.9% in the lower jaw after 5 years.[1]
Risks
Although the risks of dental implants are low, it is better to be aware of them:
Generally, implant failure translates to monetary losses. However, in case the implant fails, our clinic in Cancun will replace it without charging extra money.
The implant may not fuse into the bone. Implant fusion may be affected by uncontrolled diabetes, smoking, alcoholism, cancer or gum disease.
Infection at the implant site is another risk. Antibiotics are given after surgical implant procedure to keep infections at bay.
