In the above video the surgeon explains:

  • The stomach is attached to the spleen on the top. The surgeon frees up this attachment and connects the stomach to the large intestine at the bottom.
  • The surgeon then takes the stomach off the diaphragm.
  • They open up an area below the sleeve. They use a stapler to divide it.
  • After stapling the stomach, they now have a section that can be taken out.
  • The excised stomach is taken out from a tiny incision.
  • The surgeon then tests the connections and the stapling.
  • They do so by clapping the pouch from below and having an anesthesiologist inject the blue dye.
  • If the sleeve has no leaks, it will blow up and become taut. If it has a hole, the surgeon will be able to see it right then and there.
  • The surgeon then assures that the opening at the top through the diaphragm is not too wide.
  • If that opening is too broad, then people tend to have problems with reflex.
  • The surgeon cleans up that opening and puts in an extra stitch in there to help reinforce that area. The extra stitch ensures that the reflexes are at their minimum after the surgery.

What is Gastric Sleeve?

Gastric sleeve is a surgical weight loss procedure. The WLS surgeon reduces the stomach to about 25% of its original size.

The surgery limits the size of the stomach and restricts the amount of food one can consume.

Alternatives to Gastric Sleeve Procedure

Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass, also known as Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (RYGB), involves creating a small pouch out of the stomach.

The newly created pouch can hold approximately one ounce (oz) of food. The restriction in the amount of food the patient can have induces weight loss.

Alternatives to Gastric Sleeve

Stomach Intestinal Pylorus-Sparing Surgery (SIPS)

SIPS is also known as Single-Anastomosis Duodenal Switch. It is a modification of the traditional duodenal switch operation. The procedure includes:

  • Carrying out a sleeve gastrectomy
  • Cutting the top part of the small bowel just beyond the opening of the stomach
  • Bypassing a small section of the small intestine
  • Connecting a loop of the same to the duodenum

Gastric Balloon

Gastric balloon is a non-surgical way of losing weight. The procedure involves leaving an inflated silicon balloon in the stomach. The surgeon removes the balloon six months later.
