Why are Dentures Cheap Abroad?
A patient from the USA will find Dentures abroad at a low-cost rate in countries like Mexico, Costa Rica, Colombia, India, Vietnam, and Thailand. The price is low because of many reasons.
First of all, the cost of running a dental practice in these countries is meager as compared to that in the USA or Canada or Australia.
Moreover, the dentists here are not under any student loan, which is reflected in the patient services.[1]
Types of Dentures Abroad
Dentures are broadly classified in two types
- Complete Dentures: Patient chooses complete dentures when there are no teeth left in their mouth (edentulous patients).
- Partial Dentures: This type of denture is handy when there are still some teeth left in the mouth. Moreover, the patient opts to keep the teeth as such.
1. Complete Dentures
Sometimes, especially in old-aged patients, all the teeth fall out (Edentulous patients). In that case, it becomes mandatory to have a complete set of dentures (both upper and lower).
Complete dentures are of three types
a. Fixed Complete Dentures
b. Complete Removable Dentures
c. Snap-On Dentures
The type depends on the budget, aesthetic requirement, and the jaw-bone structure of the patient.
Did you know?
Nearly 37.9 million adults will need one or two complete dentures by 2020 in the world.[2]
a. Fixed Complete Dentures
Fixed Complete Dentures are also known as Implant-supported dentures or All-on-four/six/eight dentures. The fixed dentures are fully functional teeth that are mounted on implants which provide better stability.
Pros of Fixed Dentures:
- There is no need to remove the denture
- High success rate
- The implant-based dentures provide optimal chewing forces
- Patient needs only 2-3 visit to the clinic which is too less as compared to removable dentures
Cons of Fixed Dentures:
- Implant based dentures are expensive than the removable bridges
- It may have abrasive effects on the neighbouring teeth
b. Removable Complete Dentures
You may have seen older people taking out their dentures at night. These are completely removable dentures and are mounted on the gums. Also, there is no need for any surgical process.
Pros of Removable Complete Dentures
- Cheaper than fixed dentures
- Easy to repair than a fixed bridge
- There is no need for implants or any other surgical procedure
Cons of Removable Complete Dentures
- Limited chewing forces
- The patient is required to remove the dentures before sleeping
- Can break or crack with time
- With time, as the mouth changes shape, these dentures need to be re-aligned
- Nearly 6-7 visits are required for a good fit
c. Snap-on Dentures Abroad
Unlike removable dentures, snap-on dentures are anchored over mini-implants. Due to this reason, they are also known as "mini implant-retained dentures".
If a patient was initially using dentures, the same can be retained during this procedure. Moreover, it has minimal prosthesis movement even though it can be removed at will.
Therefore, this procedure has both advantages over removable and fixed dentures.
Pros of Snap-on-Dentures
Snap-on-Dentures over Removable Dentures
- Snap-on dentures causes decreased bone resorption.[3]
- Unlike removable dentures, snap-ons have stronger bite and are much stable.
- These have better aesthetics as compared to removable dentures.
- Snap-on dentures provide better upper and lower jaw fit, also known as occlusion.
Snap-on-Dentures over Fixed Dentures
- Less bulkier dentures[4]
- Minimally invasive as it is snapped-on mini implants which does not require extensive surgical procedure
- Cost-effective option
- Patient experiences less discomfort and pain after the procedure
- Involves less healing time
Cons of Snap-on Dentures
- Costly than removable dentures
- The time needed for implant placement and the healing time is much higher than the removable dentures, and it may need 3-4 sessions for one set.
- The dentures may stain or chip over time which adds maintenance cost
2. Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are recommended when some teeth are still left in the mouth. Along with filling the gap, it also prevents further tooth decay.
There are two types of partial dentures, namely,
- Fixed partial dentures or dental bridge
- Removable partial dentures (RPD)
a. Fixed Dental Bridge
A fixed partial denture or a dental bridge is a restorative set of artificial teeth that are used to replace one or more missing teeth.
The bridge is used where the patient has a healthy bone structure on both sides of the gap. It has 2 parts
- Pontic: Tooth-like structure that replaces the missing teeth
- Crown: A cap that covers adjacent teeth
- Abutment: The neighboring teeth that are reduced in size to support crown
Benefits of Dental Bridges
- Restores bite and clarifies speech
- Maintains the natural shape of the face
- Reduces stress on adjacent teeth
- Prevents mal-alignment of neighboring teeth
- Promotes natural-looking smile
- Prevents teeth on the opposite arch from over-erupting
b. Removable Partial Dentures
A removable partial denture (RPD) is made of artificial teeth attached to a gum-colored plastic base.
This base is connected by a metal framework that holds the denture in place.
As the remaining teeth help in holding the denture in place, they have better stability.
Material used for RPD
There are different types of RPDs depending on the material used, they are:
- Cast metal RPD- Made of a metal framework with retainers and teeth.
- Acrylic RPD- Temporary framework with wire clasps.
- Valplast RPD- Made of flexible plastic with valplast gum-colored clasps.
