What Is a Bone Graft?
A bone graft is a living tissue or a bone substitute that can promote bone healing. It is transplanted into bone-deficient areas to reverse dental bone loss.
Grafts can be natural or synthetic materials.[5] Before we study their types, we must know why bone grafts are pivotal in dentistry.
Why is Bone Grafting Required?
In dentistry, bone grafts after tooth extractions are commonly performed. Besides, they have become a necessity for the functional and esthetic success of implants in strategic sites.
Some conditions that might need a bone grafting procedure include:[6]
- Trauma/infection-induced bony defects
- Jaw bone resorption after tooth extraction
- Inheriting specific jawbone anatomy might cause damage to teeth
- Face injury or trauma causing tooth loss leading to bone loss over the years
- Periodontal disease or gum disease is sometimes responsible for poor bone health
If an individual has been edentulous (toothless) for a long time, bone absorption ensues gradually.
Types of Bone Grafts
Types of Bone Graft Materials
There are 3 types of bone graft materials. For details, read the text:?
Autogenous Grafts
The patient’s bone is taken from other areas in the mouth. Rarely, the bone may be taken from areas outside the mouth, like the hip or the shin bone.
Bone from the hip is considered the best because it has a lot of marrow (soft tissue within the bone), which contains bone-forming cells.
Did you know?
Allografts
An allograft is a graft between genetically dissimilar members of the same species. An allograft may be obtained from the living donors who have bone removed during surgery or from cadaveric donors.
Xenografts
The bone is taken from another species, usually from a cow. The bovine bone is specially processed to make it biocompatible and sterile.
Subsequently, the transplanted bone may take several months to grow to support the placement of dental implants.

Bone Graft Procedure
The bone grafting procedure entails the following:
Bone Graft Preparation
- Administration of local anesthesia to the implant site and to the donor site (from where the bone will be taken).
- The periodontist will make an incision in the gum where the implant will be placed to see how much and what type of bone is needed.
- A block of bone is removed from the chin along with any bone marrow. The resulting gap in the donor site is usually filled with another type of bone graft material and is covered with a membrane.
- The incision is then stitched closed.
In case of deficient bone in the upper back region, the sinus is lifted to provide space for bone graft and increase the height of maxillary bone.
This procedure is called a sinus lift or sinus augmentation.[10]
Sinus Lift & Bone Grafting Procedure
Placement of Bone Graft on the Implant Site
- Firstly, little holes are drilled in the existing bone to make it bleed. Because blood provides cells that help the bone heal.
- Secondly, the bone removed from the chin area is placed and is held firmly by titanium screws.
- Thirdly, the patient’s bone marrow and other bone graft material are mixed and placed around the bone block.
- Finally, a membrane is placed over the area, and the incision is stitched up.
Bone Grafting for Dental Implants
If many implants have to be placed and bone grafts are needed, a lot of bone graft material will be needed.
In such a case, a bone from your chin is not enough. Hence, it will have to be taken from the hip, shin, or some other part of the body.
This procedure is done in the hospital under general anesthesia and requires an overnight stay.
After bone augmentation, about 3 to 6 months are required for healing and osseointegration (fusing jaw bone with dental implants).[11]

Benefits of Bone Augmentation for Dental Implants Abroad
Bone grafts are essential to meet the following needs.
- Without strong jawbone support, dental implants cannot be held firmly.
- Bone grafts help restore facial esthetics and strengthen tooth substitutes.
- Bone grafting is required for better mouth functions and an attractive smile.
- In case of tooth loss, bone grafting may also be used to preserve the jawbone structure.
As per Elakkiya S and colleagues, the mean survival rate for dental implants in grafted bone was reported as 98.5%.[12]
Aftercare
The initial 24-48 hours post bone graft surgery is critical as the incision area is fresh and needs healing.
- Do not smoke, as it will interfere with healing after surgery.[13]
- Increase your liquid intake and eat soft food (yogurt, mashed potatoes, porridge) for 3 - 4 days.
- You can bite down on a tea bag or damp gauze placed over the bleeding site for 20 to 30 minutes after surgery.
- In case of swelling, apply an ice pack on the surgery site for the first 24 to 48 hours. Also, you can have cold items, like ice cream, etc.
- To maintain good oral hygiene, rinse your mouth with salt water or mouthwash. Don't rinse vigorously with an alcohol-based mouthwash.
When To Call Your Dentist?
Mild swelling and discomfort after surgery are normal, but if you have the following symptoms, then call your dentist immediately.
- Marked fever
- An uncontrollable pain
- Bleeding that will not stop
- Allergic reactions to medication
- Warm swelling of the area days after the surgery
FAQs: Bone Grafting for Dental Implants Abroad
Generally, after bone grafts, you are advised to avoid strenuous activities like bending or lifting for at least 4 days.
But, there are no restrictions on flying the same day or the next.
However, it is wise to wait for 2-3 days if bone grafting is causing discomfort and obvious swelling.
The bone graft is necessary to fill the defect area during implant surgery. And the most common procedure for bone augmentation is guided bone regeneration (GBR).
Over half of the dental arch (50.3 %) needed a bone graft for implant installation. Also, the anterior maxillary segment requires bone graft in about 77.2 % of cases.[14]
Allografts have also shown a survival rate of 90.9% - 96.23%. According to studies, there is a 5% chance of bone graft failure.[15]
There is no doubt that bone grafts act as an adjunct to dental implant placement.
For bone grafting, autogenous bone is mostly considered a gold standard due to the negligible risk of rejection.
Besides, you get the best bone graft materials abroad for dental implants.
You might feel back to normal within a week or two.
However, the complete dental bone graft healing can take between four and ten weeks – sometimes longer.[16]
Also, you can return to work the day after the procedure (or the next if sedation is chosen).
However, recovery time depends on some factors - the type of graft, the area for graft placement, and the body’s healing capacity.
There are many countries serving dental treatment at affordable costs. Turkey is the most popular for providing top-of-the-line facilities at incredible rates.
For instance, the best dental implants in Turkey cost $656, and bone grafts cost $217, which is over 50% cheaper than in the UK.[17]
Nonetheless, you can enjoy a gorgeous holiday. Turkey is known to have the best dentists in the world. Other countries that offer good quality implants and bone grafts are - Mexico, Costa Rica, and Thailand.
Depending on your native place, you can choose the nearest one.
Final Note from MTC
Now that you know everything about bone grafts, you can avoid the domino effect of problems by restoring oral health and function.
